small things.

We can do no great things, just small things with great love.

In exactly eight days our family will be growing by one. A boy no less. Into a family of girls. Collin is a lucky guy. I mean, he gets to spend the rest of his life with my sister for starters. As the oldest, Emily has more often than not been path-forger for the rest of us. She’d be the first to tell you that as sisters we’re all individuals, but in many ways we’ve all followed in her footsteps, not because of pressure or the potential for causing disappointment but because we saw Emily embrace life and faith in what she was doing and we wanted the same. Emily asks the right questions. She exudes confidence, yet understands the value of vulnerability. And her actions reflect deep care and concern for others. As a sister, I am more than happy to welcome Collin into the family because what is more exciting than getting to celebrate two people who desire to live faithfully and love others well at the start of their lives together?

Happy Day!

What a beautiful story.

When all around my soul gives way, he is all my hope and stay.

God is most glorified in us when we am most satisfied in him.

… it may be that the healthiest course of action for Christians, on this count, is to be silent for a season and learn how to enact their faith in public through acts of shalom rather than to try again to represent it publicly through law, policy, and political mobilization. This would not mean civic privatism but rather a season to learn how to engage the world in public differently and better.

… good intentions are not enough to engage the world well. The potential for stupidity, irrationality, cruelty, and harm is just as high today as it has ever been in the past. God save us from Christians who are well-intentioned, but not wise!

More mural work!

My Art in the Community class is working on another mural to go up in downtown Lincoln. We combined imagery created from Lily Yeh’s vist to UNL and painted the backdrop. We’re now working on tiling it with middle school students at Park.

It is a truly beautiful thing that art can be more than paintings on gallery walls. Rather it can be collaborative, interactive, and community centered.

Spring Break 2012

It has been a week since spring break. A week back to homework assignments, meetings, and responsibility. So often breaks get lost or disregarded in the weeks following with the mentality of “I should have done x,y,z” or “I regret not doing more.” And I think that’s a pity. So I want to take time to reflect and share a bit of what I learned on break.

Mostly I (re)learned that every moment of our life is worship. So when I get to bake with Heather, when I craft, when I sit through a rainy baseball game with friends, when I get to spend a weekend with Jake, when I get to hear amazingly talented musicians. Those moments are each a piece in the grander picture of worship. But with that coming back to the tests, the piles of assignments, the messy relationships, those are all a part of worship too. We can’t pick and choose. Living well and living in the present in all of these things allows for such a larger picture of worship and praise. And what a blessing it is that our daily actions matter for more that just getting by.

“When I worship, I would rather my heart be without words, than my words be without heart.” Lamar Boschman

Also, add this book store as places I’d like to see before I die.
